Run a Web Site on a CD or local source on your computer CASK FAQ

What is the matter?
You want to run a web site that is stored on a local source like a CD, DVD, USB device or a hard disk on your computer, instead of running it from the internet. In this case, some functionality may not work, due to the reasons 1-3 below. Furthermore, if it is necessary to adapt security settings in order to allow certain functionality, point 4 applies. (click on an item for more information):

  1. Running scripts on CD, hard disk etc. is disabled in Windows XP, Service Pack 2 or higher. To allow interactivity, this setting has to be adapted.

Go to this page to read how to enable running of scripts on local sources.

Note: this security measure for local sources is additional to the setting in the security zone 'My Computer' that allows or prevents running of scripts.

  2. Flash elements in the web site require a special permission.

Flash elements in the web site require a special permission to be able to communicate with the surrounding web page. Without this permission, parts or the whole of the web page may not function.  Go to this page to read how to grant this permission...

  3. Server based functionality does not function.

Any functionality that requires specific web server capacities will not function, as the site is not run from a web server in this case. The missing functionality may range from none to the majority of the functionality of the web site. There is no remedy besides switching to a copy of the site running from a web server.

  4. If you need to adapt any security setting for this web site in Internet Explorer, this is not as straight forward as for web sites running from the internet.

Background
Computer viruses and other malicious programs might come in the disguise of interactive web elements. As web sites normally run from the internet and not from local sources, higher levels of security apply to web sites running from local sources.
